How do I use these workbooks?
Option One
(Recommended)
Use this workbook in conjunction with individual therapy or small group therapy and recovery education classes facilitated by a licensed behavioral health professional trained in Building a Perimeter of Support. When paired with Building a Perimeter of Support curriculum, the workbook enhances learning and creates opportunity for deeper self-discovery. Completing this workbook in a therapeutic environment is recommended, as some topics may trigger the need for emotional processing and healing not appropriate for a small group setting.
Option Two
Use this workbook on your own, without the Building a Perimeter of Support curriculum. Start at the beginning of the book and work all the way through to the end. The workbook is methodically designed to begin with fundamental skills first and then work into deeper self-analysis. If used as a standalone self-help tool, you must be aware of the risk of emotional disturbance. It is your responsibility to seek therapeutic services if you feel overwhelmed by the process.
What Is a Lifestyle of Holistic Recovery?
A lifestyle of holistic recovery is an investment in healing all parts of yourself. It means choosing to live your life guided by self-awareness, values, and priorities. It is a healthy relationship with your whole self (your mind, body, and soul). You act upon situations with your addicted love one and yourself, instead of reacting with enabling behaviors, destructive emotions, self-destructive behavior or distorted thinking. Holistic recovery allows you to view addiction in the family as a hindrance to healthy family relationships and an obstacle to your own mental, emotional, and spiritual growth. Holistic recovery allows you to break free of the grip that addiction has over your family system.
What Is a Perimeter of Support?
The Perimeter of Support is your 360° shield of support. It is the collection of tools you will use to adopt a lifestyle of holistic recovery. It is formed around you when you mindfully choose to connect to people, places and things that strengthen your mind, body, and soul. The perimeter of support is built of what you value and prioritize in your life. It enables you to explore new depths of self-awareness.

Why Do I Need a Perimeter of Support?
You need a perimeter of support because it is your armor of protection against outside, negative influences as well as your own destructive, impulsive behaviors. It creates a safe space for you to increase your self-awareness and heal emotional wounds. It allows you to find peace and balance. It gives you freedom from the cycle of addiction.
What Is the Therapeutic Philosophy of This Workbook?
This workbook is predominantly informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and includes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness practices to provide a comprehensive workbook guided by evidence-based, therapeutic treatment methods. CBT contends our thoughts influence the way we feel and what we feel can drive us to react in ways based on emotional interpretation instead of facts. When we react emotionally, our reality becomes distorted, resulting in dysfunctional patterns of behavior. We learn to overcome addiction and manage mental health symptoms by identifying our triggers and analyzing our thoughts and perceptions. Developing skills such as mindfulness, communication, accountability, and emotional intelligence empower a lifestyle of holistic recovery.
